Repeat the Cycle campaign with reduce/reuse plea

March 30, 2022

In response to the news that TV presenter JJ Chalmers has teamed with Recycle Now and Clear on Plastics for the Repeat the Cycle campaign, Wouter van Tol, head of government, community affairs & sustainability, DS Smith, commented: “Recycling more of what we cannot reuse is an important part of transitioning to a circular economy, where we design out waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use, and regenerate natural systems.

“However, we must first consider reducing and reusing materials to help achieve this ambition. Our research has shown that 1.5 million tonnes of single use plastic, or 70 billion units, could be removed from supermarket shelves across Europe each year and replaced with alternative renewable and widely recycled materials like paper and cardboard.

“Consumers are keen to take home less plastic and with the Plastics Packaging Tax coming into force in the UK on the 1 April, businesses will be under more scrutiny to review the amount and type of plastic they use.

“When it comes to recycling, it’s not just the what, but the how. The UK’s current mixed recycling systems and infrastructure make it harder to effectively recycle fibre-based materials. We need to reform our approach to recycling, separating out fibre-based materials like paper and card, so that we receive the highest quality materials for recycling back into new products.”
